The first ever Doctor Who Christmas special aired in 2006, after the success of series 1 and a short Children in Need special. 'The Christmas Invasion' was followed by an interactive episode, and the eagerly awaited second series followed. The Cybermen were brought back, with a Cyber Leader and a Cyber Controller, and the Cult of Skaro made their first appearance, as did the Ood. Series 2 revealed the what the Torchwood Institute was.


From the end of series 1, David Tennant took over the role of the Doctor, with Billie Piper continuing her role as Rose Tyler.

Dr Singh, Mickey Smith and Rose Tyler are trapped in a sealed room within Torchwood Tower. Four Daleks, accompanied by a device known as the "Genesis Ark", have emerged from the void ship. A Dalek Supreme called Dalek Sec extracts information about Earth from Singh. He discovers that a separate invasion is in progress, and sends Dalek Thay out to investigate. The Cybermen, who took control of Torchwood, detect the Dalek technology and offer an alliance. The Daleks decline, and the two species declare war on each other.
